Junk is bulky waste, and Joburg gives you 14 days

Roodepoort falls under the City of Johannesburg, and the City's Waste Management By-laws have a name for the couch that won't fit in the wheelie bin: bulky waste, meaning household waste that "by virtue of its mass, shape, size or quantity, cannot easily be accommodated in a standard approved container". The by-law says it must be removed or disposed of within fourteen days at a facility the City determines. Pikitup's weekly collection won't take it.

That leaves three options: borrow a bakkie and take it to a Pikitup site yourself, ask the City to collect it and pay for that, or have a crew come to you. We do the third. We carry it out of the house or garage, load it and take it away, across Roodepoort and the West Rand.

    What we collect

One load can mix all of these. Tell us what is in the pile and we price it as one job.

    Old furniture

Couches, beds, wardrobes, tables and office furniture that are broken, worn out or simply not wanted any more.

    Appliances

Fridges, freezers, washing machines, stoves and microwaves that have died or been replaced.

    Mattresses

Old mattresses and bed bases: awkward to carry, too big for the bin, and not welcome on the verge.

    House and garage clean-outs

A garage nobody can park in, a storeroom, an outside room, or a whole house being emptied after a move or for a sale.

    E-waste

Old TVs, computers, printers and cables. These belong at an e-waste point rather than in landfill, so mention them when you book.

Your three legal options, side by side

All three are legal. Which one makes sense depends on how much there is, whether you have a bakkie, and whether you want to do the carrying.

    E-waste goes separately

Old TVs, computers and printers shouldn't end up in landfill with the rest of the junk. Pikitup says all of its garden sites have recycling bins for glass, paper, cans and plastic, and that "some of the sites also have an e-waste recycling facility".

If a clean-out includes electronics, mention them when you book so we can plan where they go. Pikitup lists its sites on its own Find a Facility page.

    What we don't take

    • Paint, solvents, pool chemicals and pesticides
    • Used motor oil, fuel and gas bottles
    • Asbestos (roof sheets, old pipes)
    • Medical and sharps waste

Under the same by-law, industrial and special waste may only be collected by an accredited service provider, so these need a specialist.

    How a junk collection works

    1. 1

Send a photo or a list

Call or SMS 060 086 6266, or use the quote form. A photo of the garage or a quick list ("two couches, a fridge, a single mattress") is enough to price it.

    2. 2

Get a price for the load

Junk is priced like the rest of what we do: by how much space it takes on the truck and how hard it is to get out. See the load sizes on our pricing page.

    3. 3

      We carry, load and go

You don't need to drag anything to the gate. We carry it out and load it.

The load sizes and what moves the price are on the rubble and junk removal prices page. If a reno left building rubble in the garage as well, we take it on the same trip (see builders rubble collection). For a big clear-out where you would rather fill a bin over a few days, see skip bin hire in Roodepoort.
